4th of July Fun: DIY All-American Oven Mitt
With the 4th of July just around the corner, I was browsing seasonal items at Dollar Tree and came across plain red oven mitts and thought it would be fun to whip up something patriotic! I always enjoy adding a few new 4th of July crafts to my growing collection of decor every year.
Earlier this year, I wrote about how I finally hit a stride with my Cricut! I had so much fun creating some St. Patrick’s Day flour sack towels and, apparently, you all thought it was fun, too, because it’s been one of my most popular blog posts of the year. It is so exciting to think of all of the iron-on project possibilities with heat transfer vinyl.

What You Need
Red Oven Mitt (Dollar Tree)
Cricut Easy Press Mat (or heat safe surface)
You can’t beat starting this project with an oven mitt that’s only $1 from Dollar Tree. It even has a nice rubber backing on the other side. I also liked that there was a nice smooth surface to iron right on with my Cricut Easy Press.
Fun Fact: I love pie! I pick pie over cake every year for my birthday and it’s definitely a go-to dessert, especially when it’s warm with a little ice cream on top. I take no credit for baking pies at our house. My hubby does the pie making and impressed me early on in our dating when he whipped up a homemade pie crust using his grandma’s recipe.
You might even remember that one of my favorite party food hacks is serving up mini-pies. I first found the pies and used them for 4th of July favor a few years ago and have since used them a Kentucky Derby dessert and a fall girls night dessert, too.
So, with pie on the brain, I started thinking, what’s more American than some pie? That inspired the “Sweet Like American Pie” design for the oven mitt! Pair it with a fresh baked (or store bought) pie for a great 4th of July hostess gift or keep it as a fun holiday decoration for your kitchen.
Start by cutting the design file. I’ve shared the design on Pinterest so you click into it and get it right in Cricut Design Space. A quick note about the heat transfer vinyl I used. While I love Cricut brand items, I’ve found a nice brand of vinyl that you can order on Amazon that comes in flat sheets and is very economical. It is nice to skip having to roll out the vinyl and it’s worked really well on other projects, too! I’ve provided the link to it below.
Weed out the excess vinyl after cutting and heat the surface of the oven mitt with the Easy Press. Next, place the cut out design on the desired spot, press for about 30 seconds and you are done! A quick project that you can enjoy or gift for the holiday!
I hope you all have a wonderful 4th of July!
