A Very Vintage Christmas: DIY Gift Box Poster Art

The Christmas tunes have been blasting since Thanksgiving and I am full on in the holiday spirit! With a name like Holly, how can I not love the holidays?! Each year, I enjoy decorating our home mixing in decor that has become a tradition with some new pieces. It’s always fun to use items in new ways and this year, my mantel is a wonderful combination of new and old!

The theme all started with 2-pack of Christmas gift boxes from Dollar Tree with re-prints of Saturday Evening Post covers. I loved the vintage look of them and just knew they’d be a perfect base for a DIY project!

What You Need

I’ve been loving the vintage style poster frame trend this year. I took my first stab at making on for my 4th of July mantel using a replica Declaration of Independence. I absolutely loved how it turned out and decided it would be fun to do on a smaller scale with the gift boxes!

To start, I avoided the need for any saw cuts by pick up a package of 12” wood slats from Hobby Lobby. These are already sanded nicely and just need stain (or you can leave them natural wood if you prefer). I used Varathane’s Premium Fast Dry Ipswich Pine. This has been a fun color to use. I last mixed it with another stain to create my own wooden chargers.

Give the slats a few hours to dry to be safe. Next, I used my favorite purchase of last year, my cordless Ryobi glue gun, to hot glue the wood slats to the top and bottom of each gift box top. I picked up these gift boxes at Dollar Tree. A package of two was only $1! Not a bad price for art!

Let the glue dry for about 10 minutes. Then, a slight deviation from my last go around at these vintage poster frames, I enlisted my hubby to help me drill holes into the top slat. Hot glue definitely works, too, but I liked the look of the tied twine knots.

Add basic jute twine with your desired length and you’re done!

These look so cute over my vintage mantel. I have just been loving all things plaid and I just couldn’t leave these adorable plaid houses behind at Walmart when I saw them. I haven’t been able to find a link online, but I still saw a few left at my store last week. They also had the adorable plaid deer for just a few dollars each!

With every mantel, I do my best to shop our house and challenge myself to use items I already have in new ways. You see how I did that with Halloween and Valentine’s Day, too! I have had the fun fabric trees for many years and mixed those in with the houses. I also got some fun new trees from a friend for my birthday that worked perfectly. The window made an appearance again as well, just in a new location! And, you’ll probably recognize the fun red truck pillow that made its debut last year.

What’s your Christmas decor vibe this year? Traditional? Modern? I’d love to know how you’re decorating!
