Did Someone Say Shiplap? Fixer Upper Viewing Party

It's no secret that I am a Fixer Upper fan! I was actually late to the game in watching the show, but I wasted no time getting myself up to speed. In the last couple of years it's inspired a few projects including a DIY shiplap wall and our own farmhouse style shelving.

I was bummed to hear that this would be the final season of the show, but then HGTV announced that a spinoff -- Fixer Upper: Behind the Design -- would premiere on April 10. Whew! I can still get that Fixer Upper and Chip & Joanna fix. Plus, if you're like me, you still have a bunch of Season 5 episodes of the original show stacked up to binge watch later. UPDATE: With Magnolia Network debuting in 2022, this makes a great watch party theme, too!

But, whether you are all caught up and ready for the new show or ready to binge past seasons, how fun would it be to invite some fellow Fixer Upper fans over for a little viewing party? I am all about celebrating the everyday and TV shows or movies can make for great party themes! One of my earliest blog posts was how to throw a party for ABC's the Bachelor & Bachelorette franchise and I still do a variation of that every season! You also might remember this Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer Viewing Party or this fun Chick Flick Movie Night.

To throw a successful viewing party, I usually focus on three things:

  1. Some themed decor that highlights the TV show or movie you'll be watching.

  2. Simple snacks. It's always a bonus if they also fit the theme!

  3. Easy cleanup!

Themed Decor

This is a party where you can definitely shop your house! I started by thinking about my own home decor (plenty of which was Fixer Upper inspired) including my new Ikea tool box. It was under $10 and is a perfect piece to change out floral or goodies for fun centerpieces. I also grabbed some greens that I'd picked up at Hobby Lobby and Ikea over the past few years. I'd also recommend shopping the house for a tablecloth or table runner that you already have on hand!

Next, I raided our workshop for some tools! The older the tools looked, the better. I selected a mix of a hammer, a few wrenches, some tools that I am not even sure what they do to be honest, but they had cool wooden handles and some paint brushes! Using greens and some dollar store terracotta pots I had on hand, I styled the tools along with some of the ribbon from Chip and Joanna's Hearth & Hand line from Target into the toolbox.

I also had some of the wrapping paper from the Hearth & Hand line and used that to create a backdrop as well as some napkin rings! A little scissors and tape and you've got all you need for some decor. I used my hubby's tool belt as a utensil holder! It was perfect with all of the pockets.

Speaking of the Hearth & Hand line, I have loved so many of the items! Keep an eye out for sale or clearance items from this line as well! I snagged the black and clay pitcher during the holiday clearance along with the two black house bud vases for under $10 total! I filled the vase with some faux lavender from Amazon

Finally, my wonderful friend Christina of Sunshine Tulip Design created the most adorable signage that fit the theme perfectly! You can grab the show's famous "Today is a Good Day for a Good Day" quote on a cute shiplap backdrop and a couple of other signs as well.

Simple Snacks

Viewing parties don't need extensive menus! A few snacks usually do the trick! For this gathering, I even had most of these items in the cupboard! Pop up some popcorn and you've got Popcorn "Ceiling." I think Chip and Joanna would recommend popcorn as a snack and probably remove that popcorn ceiling.

Some "Paint" Chips & Salsa are also an easy snack! As a complete accident, my hubby recently purchased some Clint's Texas Salsa. It was perfect! I mean who doesn't love Clint's custom pieces on the show and it's set in Texas?!

Both of these snacks can be served in plastic paint trays! We had some extras around the house, but you can grab packs for a few dollars at your local home improvement store

Finally, every party needs a little sweet treat. These "Not Quite Magnolia Bakery" cupcakes are just plain old grocery store cupcakes that are display on a cute pedestal platter and topped off with these darling printable cupcake toppers from Sunshine Tulip Design. You can cut them out by hand or use a 2 inch circle punch. Then, I just attach them to wooden picks!

Easy Cleanup

When hosting a viewing party, you may want to invite several people over. While I love using beautiful dinnerware, sometimes paper products are just easier! I used paper napkins to wrap up plastic spoons and forks and added a little wrapping paper napkin ring.

I also used the wrapping paper to create a little display for some black paper plates. The paint trays can be rinsed and recycled after the party is over. The rest of the decor went back to it's original places around the house and the tools headed back to the workshop. Gotta love an easy cleanup!

Are you a Fixer Upper fan? Are you planning to watch the new spinoff? I'd love to know what you think!
