Crafting with Carols: DIY Sheet Music Ornaments

I am a frequenter of many of the vintage/upcycle home decor shops and local craft markets. Each year around the holiday season I come across some item made with sheet music and think to myself, "I could totally do that." Finally this year I decided to make it happen!

A quick trip to Goodwill landed me with an entire book of well-worn Christmas sheet music and it only set me back $.99! I've got a few project ideas with sheet music, but up first were some simple glass ornaments. Not only do I think they'd look great on the tree, but also will make for fun tie ons when wrapping gifts for others.

This was a quick and easy project. I also was able to find the clear glass ornaments I needed at Goodwill. For only $1.99, I got 6 ornaments. If you can't find them at a local thrift store, retailers like Target sell boxes for around $6 and you can always use the weekly Michael's 40% off coupon to grab some there as well.

The first step is cutting up the sheet music into strips. Make sure to assess the size of the opening to the ornament to determine the how thick you should cut the strips. I varied mine in thickness to make each ornament unique. To get the most musical notes and lyrics displayed, be sure to cut horizontal strips, although I did some vertical to mix things up as well.

I used my cutting board for a while and then just went with the scissors. In no time, I had stuffed ornaments that look like this:

And here are some shots of them hung up on the tree. I used some twine to continue the vintage vibe, but you could use ribbon or just plain ornament hooks to finish them off. And, just like that you have some homemade ornaments for just a few dollars.
